Understanding Processes

Knowledge is more than knowing words.  Knowledge is about understanding entities, i.e. people, places, and things, which are defined by those words and how one entity affects other entities through activity and transformation. For example, I can describe the life development cycle of an almond tree:

An almond fruit falls to the ground. On the next rainy day, it sinks into the mud as the moisture and mold spores cause the fruit and shell casings to decay.  The smaller seed sinks deeper into the soil where it hibernates through the cold winter weather - protected by the insulation of the soil. As the warm spring rain water seeps into the soil, the seed germinates into a sprout that forces itself up through the warm, wet soil to grow into a young almond tree sapling.  After a few seasons of growth, the young tree begins to produce its own almond blossoms that bees can pollinate.  Those blossoms then transform into almond fruit that drop to the ground in the fall.

Studying processes allows students to understand the activity of people, animals, plants and things that are constantly changing, how changes occur, and why.
